SEE Region: Second Greece-Bulgaria interconnection enters testing period

400 kV high-voltage overhead transmission line between Greece and Bulgaria has been energized and its 72-hour testing period has started, Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO announced. The procedure for the testing was made possible after ADMIE completed the 29 kilometres long Greek section of the interconnection.

The new electricity interconnection connects the Maritsa East substation in Bulgaria and Nea Santa in Greece. It is expected to be put into operation at the end of summer.

The so-called Perperikon electricity interconnection should contribute to raising the transmission capacity at Bulgaria’s border with Greece and to the efficient use of electricity produced by renewable sources.

The project is worth 66.4 million euros and consists of an overhead transmission line, an underground transmission line, substation and interconnection, with a total length of 151 km. Construction of the Bulgarian section started in 2020 and was completed in 2021.
