SEE Region, Increase in hydropower production by 29 percent, to 2.23 TWh in the ninth week

Total hydropower production in Southeast Europe increased for the ninth week compared to the previous week, as a result of heavy rainfall across the region. Hydropower production increased in this period by nearly 29 percent, to 2.23 TWh.

High hydropower production was registered in most markets in the region, with Serbia recording the highest growth percentage during the ninth week, by 56 percent, to 338.5 GWh. Romania recorded a 23 percent increase in production in hydropower plants, to 438 GWh.

Greece was the only country in SEE to register lower hydropower production for the ninth week, by 14 percent, due to lower rainfall and lower reserve levels in reservoirs.

In the ninth week, thermal energy production also increased compared to the previous week, mainly due to higher gas-based electricity production of about 5 percent. As a result, the SEE region recorded a slight increase in production in thermal power plants by about 3 percent, to 8.88 TWh.

Lignite-based production in Greece increased minimally and amounted to 145 GWh, while gas-based production increased significantly, by 23 percent and reached 28 GWh.

Bulgaria, one of the leading exporters of electricity in the region, achieved minimal growth in coal and gas-based production by 1 to 2 percent.
