SEE Region: Additional EIA study for HPP Buk Bijela

An additional environmental impact assessment (EIA) study will be developed for the project for the hydropower plant Buk Bijela, Milan Bastinac, Assistant to the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Srpska (RS) said. EIA study will assess potential effects on the protected area of Durmitor National Park in Montenegro.

Bastinac led a delegation from the RS Government in a meeting with Lazar Assomo, the director of UNESCO’s World Heritage Center, regarding the dispute initiated by Montenegro at UNESCO concerning the potential impact on the protected area of Durmitor due to the construction of the HPP Buk Bijela. He said that it was agreed during the meeting to conduct an additional environmental impact assessment study that will assess potential effects on the UNESCO-protected area of Durmitor National Park in Montenegro, as well as the impact of the power plant construction on the Danube salmon.

Preparatory work on the site of HPP Buk Bijela will be completed by September. This includes the construction of a workers’ settlement, the company’s administrative building, and all access roads to the dam construction site. The construction of this hydropower plant, worth around 250 million euros, is a joint project of RS and Serbia.
