Romania, Wpd said that it is planning to develop two offshore wind projects in Black Sea

German wpd said that it is planning to develop two offshore wind projects in the Romanian part of the Black Sea, with combined installed capacity of 1.9 GW.

The statement from wpd said that the two project companies have already been established in order to develop the projects – 500 MW offshore wind farm Black Sea 1 and 1.4 GW offshore wind farm Black Sea 2.

Head of wpd’s offshore wind projects in Romania Gabriela Dan Unterseh said that, in July 2021, wpd became the first company to officially apply before Romanian authorities for the development of offshore wind projects in the Black Sea, adding that the company has its sights firmly set on the Romanian RES market and can build on a promising pipeline in the offshore wind sector.

According to a study by Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) published in 2020, Romania’s offshore wind sector has estimated
total potential natural capacity of 76 GW, out of which 22 GW could be installed as fixed turbines, with a total estimated annual electricity generation of 239 TWh.

wpd has been active in Romania since 2009. In addition to the two offshore projects, the company has projects for onshore wind farms with a total capacity of 1,300 MW under development in the country.
