Romania sees decline in natural gas imports, with projected increase in domestic production through 2027

Natural gas imports in Romania during the first nine months of 2024 totaled 1.361 million tons of oil equivalent, representing a decrease of 10.9% or 166,300 tons compared to the same period in 2023, according to data from the National Institute for Statistics (INS).

At the same time, domestic natural gas production reached 5.635 million tons of oil equivalent, marking a 0.8% increase (42,800 tons) compared to the previous year.

The National Commission for Strategy and Forecast projects that natural gas production will grow at an average annual rate of 1.7% between 2024 and 2027, following a 1.4% increase in 2023. According to the latest energy balance forecast, production in 2024 is expected to reach 7.675 million tons of oil equivalent, a 0.6% increase. By 2025, production is forecasted to rise to 7.79 million tons (+1.5%), 7.907 million tons in 2026 (+1.5%), and 8.176 million tons in 2027 (+3.4%).

Regarding gas imports, Romania is expected to see an over 10% increase in 2024, after which imports are projected to decrease, with a more significant decline of 6% expected by 2027. This decrease is anticipated due to a rise in domestic production, driven by new capacity additions, while also considering the continued transit of gas to foreign markets.
