Romania: Parapet completes first solar repowering project

Parapet, a provider of EPC solutions in the renewable energy sector, has successfully completed its first repowering project for a solar power plant in Romania. The project, located at the Solar Electric Frasinet plant in the southern part of the country and owned by the Austrian Kraftfeld Group, involved upgrading the facility’s infrastructure.

The solar power plant, which spans approximately 16.5 hectares and has a total capacity of 9.5 MW, saw around 3 MW of its installed capacity fully modernized. The repowering effort included replacing 11,550 photovoltaic panels due to issues with cracked back sheets in several modules, which had led to reduced electricity production. These faulty panels were replaced under a warranty claim, effectively restoring the plant’s full capacity and improving its efficiency.

Paul Moldovan, CTO of Parapet, highlighted that this project is a pioneering effort in Romania, marking the repowering of a solar power plant installed during the early phase of renewable energy development in the country. It is Parapet’s first such project in Romania and the fifth in Europe, following similar projects in France, Germany, and Austria. By replacing the damaged panels, the Frasinet solar power plant is now operating at full capacity once more. Moldovan also noted that Parapet expects to see a rise in similar projects across Romania, aiming to enhance the performance of existing solar facilities and support sustainable renewable energy production nationwide.
