Romania: Nuclearelectrica reports 31.9% profit decline in 2024 amid lower electricity prices

Romanian electricity producer Nuclearelectrica, the operator of the country’s sole nuclear power plant at Cernavoda, reported a net profit of approximately 344 million euros in 2024, marking a 31.9% decline compared to 2023. The company’s operating income also dropped by 36.9%, reaching around 974 million euros.

Revenues from electricity sales totaled about 931 million euros, reflecting a 27.6% decrease. Despite this decline, electricity production remained stable at 10,019 GWh, similar to the previous year. Since January 1, 2023, Nuclearelectrica has been participating in the Centralized Electricity Procurement Mechanism (MACEE) as a seller.

The company’s weaker financial performance was primarily due to lower electricity prices. While it sold a similar volume of energy through both the regulated MACEE mechanism and market sales, the regulated price within MACEE was reduced from 91 to 81 euros/MWh as of April 1, 2024. Additionally, the average price obtained from market sales plummeted by over 52% last year, dropping to approximately 91 euros/MWh.
