Romania: Nuclearelectrica grows profit in H1 2025 despite higher Energy Transition Fund costs

Nuclearelectrica posted a net profit of around 174 million euros in the first half of 2025, marking a 2.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

EBITDA edged down by 0.5 percent, mainly due to a sharp rise in the Contribution to the Energy Transition Fund (CFTE), which climbed by roughly 100 million euros. This pressure came despite a 23.1 percent increase in electricity selling prices on nearly unchanged volumes (down 1 percent). The effect was partly offset by a 30.5 percent rise in electricity sales revenue and a 33.2 percent boost in financial income.

Operating income jumped 29.7 percent, driven largely by the surge in electricity sales revenue, reflecting the higher average selling price between January and June 2025 versus the same period in 2024.

CFTE payments totaled about 101.6 million euros for the half year, compared with just 1.3 million euros a year earlier, as certain transaction prices surpassed the regulated threshold that triggers the levy. Operating expenses, excluding depreciation, impairment, and CFTE, rose 14.5 percent year-on-year, mainly due to higher nuclear fuel costs and additional electricity purchases to cover shortfalls during scheduled and unscheduled outages.

The net financial result improved by 37.5 percent, supported by a 33.2 percent increase in financial income from interest and favorable foreign exchange movements.

Gross electricity production from Cernavoda’s two nuclear units reached 5,128,340 MWh in the first half of 2025, including 2,175,340 MWh in the second quarter. Deliveries to Romania’s national grid totaled 4,706,466 MWh in the first six months, down 1.1 percent from 4,756,587 MWh a year earlier. In Q2 alone, deliveries stood at 1,985,570 MWh, virtually unchanged from 1,988,598 MWh in Q2 2024.
