Romania: NPP Cernavoda signed a contract with Canadian company

Nuclearelectrica has signed a contract with Canadian Laurentis Energy Partners for the conservation and protection of reactor water system s during the refurbishment of NPP Cernavoda’s unit 1. Laurentis said in a statement that the contract includes the development of a conservation program for the protection of the integrity of unit 1 reactor while it is drained of water during refurbishment. The contract is worth around 3.1 million euros. The contract award is for phase 1 of the refurbishment process, which provides system analysis and design engineering for over 21 months throughout 2021 and 2022. Phase 2 will consist in the actual implementation of the program, following regulatory approval for the refurbishment, scheduled to move forward in 2026-2027. Nuclearelectrica operates NPP Cernavoda with two CANDU-6 reactors, generating about 18 % of Romania’s total electricity output. Unit 1 came into service in 1996, while unit 2 came online in 2007.
