Romania: New smart grid project proposed

The project covers the electricity network in six counties in the northeastern Romania, but also aims to develop the network interconnections between Romania and Hungary, where there are increased requests for connection to the network of renewable sources, and between Romania and Moldova.

This project for the modernization of electricity network in northern Romania, also aimed to allow better integration of renewable energy producers, has been included in the fifth list of proposed projects of common interest (PCI), published by the European Commission. The so-called CARMEN (Carpathian Modernized Energy Network) project is endorsed by local subsidiary of German E.ON, which operates one of the eight areas of the electricity distribution network in Romania. It also includes the participation of Romanian electricity transmission system operator Transelectrica and its Hungarian counterpart MAVIR. If approved, the project will receive direct funding from the European Commission.
