Romania: New mixed gas-hydrogen project announced

A new Romanian energy project included in the country’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) – a natural gas-fired power plant in Constanta on the Black Sea coast, was announced by Romanian Minister of Energy Virgil Popescu. The project would use gas mixture with 30 % of hydrogen, produced with electricity from solar and wind capacities in the region.

Minister Popescu stressed that it is a new concept through which it produces electricity and heat in cogeneration with a mixture of 30 % hydrogen,70 % natural gas. Hydrogen is produced using electricity from wind and solar facilities, abundant in the region. It also captures CO2, which will be injected in greenhouses and, depending on the size of the greenhouses, neutrality in terms of CO2 emissions could be reached. Constanta facility will be part of the pilot program of PNRR on this concept and will be completed by 2026.

Romanian media speculate that the project could be developed by GSP Power, the energy division of Grup Servicii Petroliere. The company is already developing 155 MW cogeneration plant in Constanta.
