Romania: New 1.750 MW gas-fired power plant in Mintia to be operational by 2027

The largest natural gas-fired power plant in Europe, with a capacity of 1.7 GW and a yield of 64%, developed by Mass Group Holding on the site of former coal-fired power plant Mintia, will be commissioned by the end of 2026, Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja announced. He added that the investment represents the substantial support that Romania receives on the path of green transition and for the replacement of coal with natural gas. The investment in the project amounts to 1.3 billion euros.

In 2022, Expert Insolventa, the judicial administrator of Energy Complex Hunedoara, announced that Mass Global Energy has become the owner of coal-fired thermal power plant Mintia after making the full payment for the takeover. The transaction, which totals over 91.2 million euros without VAT, is considered one of the most important for the Romanian energy sector and the largest insolvency transaction this year.

In May, Greek AVAX Group signed a contract worth 673.5 million euros with Iraqi company Mass Group Holding for the engineering, construction and commissioning of a 1,750 MW combined cycle power plant in Romania.
