Romania, Net coal production in H1 2022 totaled 1.459 million tons of oil equivalent

According to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), Romanian net coal production in the first half of 2022 totaled 1.459 million tons of oil equivalent, which is by 1 % (14,100 tons of oil equivalent) more than in the same period in 2021.

In January-June period, Romania imported 281,500 tons of oil equivalent of coal, which is by 51,200 tons of oil equivalent (22.2 %) more compared to the quantity imported in the same period last year.

The National Strategy and Forecast Commission estimates for 2022 a coal production of 3.325 million tons of oil equivalent, up 10.1 % compared to 2021, and imports of 420,000 tons of oil equivalent, up 2.8%. For 2023, it forecasts a production of 3.595 million tons of oil equivalent, up by 8.1 %, and imports of 420,000 tons of oil equivalent.

According to the National Energy Strategy, total coal production will decrease from 32 TWh in 2030 to 12 TWh in 2050, continuing the trend of decreasing coal in the energy mix (45 TWh in 2020).
