Romania: NEPI Rockcastle aims for 48% renewable electricity by 2026 with new 54 MW solar power plant

NEPI Rockcastle has unveiled ambitious plans to source 48% of the electricity consumed by its Romanian shopping centers from its own renewable energy installations by the end of 2026. At the heart of this initiative is a new 54.1 MW greenfield solar power plant located in Arad County, part of a larger €110 million investment in clean energy.

Construction of the Chisineu-Cris solar facility began in January, with grid connection expected in the fourth quarter of 2025. Once operational, this plant will represent about one-third of NEPI Rockcastle’s total 159 MW solar capacity, which includes rooftop and ground-mounted solar projects spread across 28 properties as well as several new developments.

The power plant will feature 84,000 LONGi Hi-MO 9 back-contact solar panels, each boasting 24.8% efficiency and designed to withstand Romania’s variable climate. These high-performance modules are expected to deliver consistent, low-maintenance energy output over the long term. According to Andrei Radu, the company’s development director, the renewable energy rollout is planned in three phases, reflecting a strong commitment to reducing the group’s carbon footprint.

Developed by SOLPOWER Energy and engineered by ENEVO Group, the Chisineu-Cris plant is projected to generate over 70,000 MWh annually—enough to power approximately 29,300 homes—and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by roughly 21,100 tons each year.

As Europe’s third-largest publicly listed retail real estate owner by portfolio value, NEPI Rockcastle manages assets worth €8 billion across eight Central and Eastern European countries. The company holds leading market positions in Romania and Poland and operates shopping centers in Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania.
