Romania: Natural gas imports drop by 15.7% in 2024, domestic production sees growth

According to data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), Romania’s natural gas imports in the first eleven months of 2024 totaled 1.612 million tons of oil equivalent, reflecting a 15.7% decrease (313,500 tons) compared to the same period in the previous year. Meanwhile, domestic natural gas production reached 6.912 million tons of oil equivalent, marking a 1% increase (70,300 tons) compared to the same period in 2023.

The National Commission for Strategy and Forecast estimates that natural gas production will continue to grow at an average annual rate of 1.7% from 2024 to 2027, following a 1.4% increase in 2023. The latest energy balance forecast predicts production in 2024 will reach 7.675 million tons of oil equivalent, a 0.6% increase. By 2025, production is expected to rise to 7.79 million tons (+1.5%), reaching 7.907 million tons in 2026 (+1.5%) and 8.176 million tons in 2027 (+3.4%).

In terms of gas imports, a 10% increase is anticipated in 2024, followed by a decline in the years to come. The drop in imports is expected to accelerate by 2027, with a forecasted decrease of 6%, driven by increased domestic production from new capacities and sustained transit to foreign markets.
