Romania: Natural gas imports decline in 2024 as domestic production increases

According to data from the National Institute for Statistics (INS), Romania’s natural gas imports in 2024 totaled 1.821 million tons of oil equivalent, marking a decrease of 13.9% (or 294,800 tons) compared to the previous year. On the other hand, domestic natural gas production reached 7.57 million tons of oil equivalent, reflecting a slight increase of 0.9% (or 70,700 tons) compared to 2023.

The National Commission for Strategy and Forecast estimates that natural gas production will grow at an average annual rate of 1.7% from 2024 to 2027, building on a 1.4% increase in 2023. In its latest energy balance forecast, the Commission projects production to reach 7.675 million tons of oil equivalent in 2024 (a 0.6% increase), 7.79 million tons in 2025 (+1.5%), 7.907 million tons in 2026 (+1.5%), and 8.176 million tons in 2027 (+3.4%).

Regarding gas imports, an increase of over 10% is anticipated for 2024. However, imports are expected to decline in the subsequent years, with a notable drop of 6% by 2027. This decrease is attributed to rising domestic production, driven by the entry of new capacities, and the continued maintenance of transit to foreign markets.
