Romania: Increase of electricity consumption in the first four months of 2021

In the first four months of 2021 electricity consumption in Romania amounted to 23.28 TWh, which is 5.8 % more compared to the same period in 2020, according to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).

The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 13.74 TWh, which is 3.7 % more compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 4.88 TWh, which is a 10.3 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 4.4 % amounting to some 196.9 GWh. Total electricity production reached 20.7 TWh in the first four months of the year, which is 6.6 % more compared to the same period in 2020. Production in thermal power plants increased by 6.5 % and reached 7.73 TWh. Production in hydropower plants increased by 35.1 % to 6.17 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda decreased by 5.1 % to 3.89 TWh. Production of wind power dropped by 16.9 % compared to the same period of 2020, reaching 2.44 TWh. Solar power production decreased by 15.7 % to 462.3 GWh. Electricity exports in January-April 2021 amounted to 2.16 TWh, which is by 9.3 % more compared to the same period in 2020. At the same time electricity imports increased by 0.1 % and amounted to 2.58 TWh. Total production of primary energy resources in the first four months of 2021 amounted to 6,325 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 0.9 % less than in 2020. Coal production reached 1,025.5 million tons of oil equivalent (+ 12.3 %), oil production reached 1,035.2 million tons of oil equivalent (- 6.1 %), while production of natural gas reached 2,530 million tons of oil equivalent (- 5.1 %).
