Romania: Increase in electricity consumption

In the first five months of 2021 electricity consumption in Romania amounted to 23.18 TWh, which is 6.3 % more compared to the same period in 2020, according to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).

The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 16.97 TWh, which is 5.6 % more compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 5.97 TWh, which is a 8.8 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 4.7 % amounting to some 230.8 GWh. Total electricity production reached 25.7 TWh in the first five months of the year, which is 9.9 % more compared to the same period in 2020. Production in thermal power plants increased by 10.6 % and reached 9.12 TWh. Production in hydropower plants increased by 48.6 % to 8.39 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda decreased by 11.4 % to 4.56 TWh. Production of wind power dropped by 17.8 % compared to the same period of 2020, reaching 2.96 TWh. Solar power production decreased by 9.4 % to 668.2 GWh. Electricity exports in January-May 2021 amounted to 2.91 TWh, which is by 30 % more compared to the same period in 2020. At the same time electricity imports decreased by 2.7 % and amounted to 3.08 TWh. Total production of primary energy resources in the first five months of 2021 amounted to 7,876 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 2.1 % more than in 2020. Coal production reached 1,287 million tons of oil equivalent (+ 25.7 %), oil production reached 1,305 million tons of oil equivalent (- 5.5 %), while production of natural gas reached 3,134 million tons of oil equivalent (- 1.8 %).
