Romania: Hidroelectrica to raise electricity prices for residential customers by 60% starting April 2025

Romanian electricity producer Hidroelectrica, which is also active in the supply sector, plans to increase electricity prices for both existing and new residential customers by 60% starting from 1 April 2025. However, despite the price hike, the final price per kWh—including transport costs, fees, and taxes—will only rise by 25%, depending on regional electricity distribution fees. Hidroelectrica currently offers the lowest electricity prices among all suppliers in Romania.

The company has officially informed customers that from 1 April, it will adjust the price of active electricity supplied. The new final prices will range from 0.21 to 0.23 euros/kWh, depending on the region.

Only households consuming more than 255 kWh per month during the April–June period will be affected by these new rates, assuming the Government extends the current price cap and compensation scheme for an additional three months, as has been announced. Under the current cap, households using up to 100 kWh per month pay 0.14 euros/kWh, while those consuming between 101 and 255 kWh per month are charged 0.16 euros/kWh. The Government covers the difference between the capped price and the supplier’s rate through supplementary levies on energy producers who sell electricity at higher prices.
