Romania: Hidroelectrica sees 38% drop in Q1 2025 output, confirms €800 million dividend payout

Romanian state-controlled electricity producer Hidroelectrica reported a sharp year-on-year decline in electricity output for the first quarter of 2025, with gross generation falling 38% to 2,735 GWh. Net production mirrored this decline, also down 38% to 2,656 GWh. Electricity sales dropped by 36% to 2,843 GWh, while electricity purchases rose 10% to 196 GWh.

The report was released after market close on a day the company’s stock rose 1.25%. Despite recent performance challenges, Hidroelectrica confirmed it will distribute over €800 million in dividends, drawn from its 2024 net profit of €824 million. This represents a gross dividend yield of 7.4%, based on the closing share price as of April 29.

In 2024, the company’s net earnings fell 35% year-on-year, largely due to a 25% drop in revenues, which totaled €1.82 billion. The downturn was primarily driven by a 22% decline in electricity generation.

As of April 29, Hidroelectrica’s market capitalization stood at nearly €11 billion, despite a 9.4% decrease in its share value over the past year.
