Romania: Environmental permit obtained for exploitation at Rosia lignite mine

In order to continue exploration and the works in the extended license perimeter at Rosia open pit mine, at a capacity of 8 million tons of lignite per year, coal-based electricity producer Energy Complex (EC) Olteania obtained the environmental permit.

The statement from the company said that the permit will allow the work front to be secured and the excavators to be placed on the upper steps, which will also contribute to the establishment of the coal stock necessary to pass the winter season. The permit is issued by APM Gorj and is valid for the entire period of the project.

In order to obtain it, the company has proved that it complies with the conditions imposed by the environmental legislation. The previous permit was canceled in October 2019, following the appeals filed by non-governmental environmental organizations. The company will make every effort that such situations, should not repeat. Rosia open pit mine is the largest exploitation of EC Oltenia and provides the coal needed for the operation of thermal power plant Rovinari.

At the same time, the mine is a component of the restructuring and decarbonization plan 2020-2026 that EC Oltenia will carry out during a five-year period, with major importance in ensuring the continuity of coal-based electricity generation.
