Romania: Electricity market sees moderate price rise and lower volume in May 2025

In May 2025, the average price of electricity on the day-ahead market of Romania’s OPCOM energy exchange reached 85.9 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh). This marks a 5.14% increase compared to May 2024, but a slight 0.64% decrease from April 2025, when the average price was 86.44 euros/MWh.

The total traded volume on the day-ahead market in May stood at 1.18 million MWh, representing a year-on-year drop of 19.35%, yet showing a 2.65% rise from the previous month. The average hourly traded volume was 1,592.4 MWh/h. In financial terms, the total value of transactions on this market segment amounted to 108.6 million euros. This figure is 16.29% lower than in May 2024 (129.8 million euros) but 1.7% higher than in April (106.8 million euros). The share of the day-ahead market in forecasted net consumption for May 2024 was 30.93%.

On the intraday market, 201,754.9 MWh was traded during May, which is a 4.02% increase year-on-year, but 3.33% less than in April. The average price on the intraday market was 79.24 euros/MWh—1.03% lower compared to May 2024, but 10.42% higher than in April.

For bilateral contracts with delivery in May, the total traded volume amounted to 1.208 million MWh, with an average price of 101.21 euros/MWh.

Overall, May 2025 reflected moderate price increases on key market segments, a decline in year-on-year trading volumes, and ongoing fluctuations driven by market conditions and seasonal consumption trends.
