Romania, Electricity generation of Hidroelectrica dropped by 30 % compared to the same period last year

In the first half of 2022, electricity generation of the largest Romanian electricity producer Hidroelectrica dropped by 30 % compared to the same period last year.

This year’s six-month output reached 7 TWh, compared to 10 TWh in the first half of 2021, which was a very good year in hydrological terms. On the other hand, 2022 is marked by severe droughts and lack of precipitation.

However, Hidroelectrica estimates that its 2022 electricity generation will amount to around 14 TWh, which is in line with the long-term average of around 14.5 TWh. If these estimates are proved true, then Hidroelectrica’s electricity output in 2022 will be by 15 % lower compared to the previous year.

However, the level of water flows in Hidroelectrica’s reservoirs are the lowest for the month of July in the last five years. Water flows in the Romanian section of the Danube is 1,850 cubic meters per second, which is roughly a third of the multi-year average for the month of July (5,350 cubic meters per second).
