Romania, Electricity consumption rose by 7 % in H1 2021

According to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), electricity consumption in Romania in the first half of 2021 amounted to 27.59 TWh, which is 7 % more compared to the same period in 2020.

The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 20.32 TWh, which is 6.8 % more compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 7.01 TWh, which is a 8.3 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 4.3 % amounting to some 266.9 GWh.

Total electricity production reached 30.8 TWh in the first half of the year, which is 12 % more compared to the same period in 2020. Production in thermal power plants increased by 14.1 % and reached 10.7 TWh. Production in hydropower plants increased by 42.1 % to 10.5 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda decreased by 10.8 % to 5.32 TWh. Production of wind power dropped by 12.3 % compared to the same period of 2020, reaching 3.41 TWh. Solar power production decreased by 1.6 % to 868.8 GWh.

Electricity exports in January-June 2021 amounted to 3.59 TWh, which is by 40.7 % more compared to the same period in 2020. At the same time electricity imports decreased by 7 % and amounted to 3.42 TWh.

Total production of primary energy resources in the first six months of 2021 amounted to 9,380 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 3.3 % more than in 2020. Coal production reached 1,537 million tons of oil equivalent (+ 24.9 %), oil production reached 1,562 million tons of oil equivalent (- 5.2 %), while production of natural gas reached 3,706 million tons of oil equivalent (+ 0.3 %).
