Romania: Delgaz Grid invests record €250 million in 2025 to modernize energy infrastructure

Delgaz Grid, part of the E.ON Romania group, invested over €171 million in 2024 to upgrade natural gas and electricity distribution networks. For 2025, the company has allocated a record €250 million for infrastructure investments, marking a 46% increase from the previous year.

In the natural gas sector, Delgaz Grid invested over €72 million, modernizing 365 kilometers of gas pipelines and connections while expanding the network by 459 kilometers to supply nearly 35,000 new consumers. Collaborating with local authorities, the company established gas distribution stations in 10 localities across Iași, Bacău, Arad, and Sibiu counties, covering 68 kilometers with a total investment of approximately €3.3 million. Additionally, 12 gas regulation and metering stations in Bacău, Cluj, Mureș, Neamț, Sălaj, Satu Mare, and Timiș counties were upgraded, significantly improving service quality.

Delgaz Grid also concluded the 20HyGrid pilot project, which tested the feasibility of supplying homes with a mix of 80% natural gas and 20% hydrogen using existing infrastructure. Both laboratory and field tests were conducted to explore partial decarbonization solutions for the heating sector.

More than €99 million was invested in the electricity network, leading to the modernization of over 2,000 kilometers of transmission lines and the expansion of 453 kilometers of new connections, benefiting over 22,000 new consumers.

Digitalization efforts have reached over 90% completion, with the Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) nearing full implementation. This platform integrates operational control, planning, and management for high, medium, and low-voltage networks.

In smart metering, the Measurement Data Management/Data Collection Management (MDM/MDC) platform, capable of handling 1.6 million meters, became fully operational. By the end of 2024, over 516,000 smart meters had been installed and integrated.

Delgaz Grid continues to enhance automation, with 124 of its 133 transformer stations now integrated into the SCADA system, along with over 600 automated transformer stations in urban areas. Additionally, more than 1,900 remote-controlled devices, such as disconnectors and reclosers, have been installed in medium-voltage overhead networks to improve efficiency and reliability.

With a historic €250 million investment planned for 2025, Delgaz Grid aims to further modernize Romania’s energy infrastructure, enhance network reliability, and support the country’s energy transition.
