Romania: Decrease in electricity production in 2020

In the first eleven months of 2020 electricity consumption in Romania amounted to 48.55 TWh, which is 4 % less compared to the same period last year, according to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).

The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 36.34 TWh, which is 6.3 % less compared to the same period last year, mostly due to coronavirus induced lockdowns. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 11.75 TWh, which is a 4.3 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 12.2 % amounting to some 458 GWh. Total electricity production reached 50.62 TWh in the first eleven months of 2020, which is 6.5 % less than in the same time last year. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 15.5 % and reached 18.17 TWh. Production in hydropower plants decreased by 3.8 % to 14.19 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda increased by 1.9 % to 10.42 TWh. Production of wind power rose by 2.9 % compared to January-November 2019 period, reaching 6.18 TWh. Solar power production decreased by 0.2 % to 1.67 TWh. Electricity exports in the first eleven months of 2020 amounted to 4.38 TWh, which is by 40.6 % higher compared to the same period last year. At the same time electricity imports increased by 56.5 % and amounted to 7.02 TWh. Total production of primary energy resources in January-November 2020 amounted to 16,400 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 10.1 % less than in the same period in 2019. Coal production reached 2,353 million tons of oil equivalent (- 30.4 %), oil production reached 2,971 million tons of oil equivalent (- 2.7 %), while production of natural gas reached 6,628 million tons of oil equivalent (- 10 %).
