Romania: Decrease in electricity production in 2020

In the first ten months of 2020 electricity consumption in Romania amounted to 43.69 TWh, which is 5.1 % less compared to the same period last year, according to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).

The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 32.63 TWh, which is 7.6 % less compared to the same period last year, mostly due to coronavirus induced lockdowns. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 10.64 TWh, which is a 3.8 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 10.8 % amounting to some 417.5 GWh. Total electricity production reached 45.69 TWh in the first ten months of 2020, which is 7.1 % less than in the same time last year. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 16.5 % and reached 16.16 TWh. Production in hydropower plants decreased by 7.4 % to 12.75 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda increased by 1.8 % to 9.4 TWh. Production of wind power rose by 10.4 % compared to January-October 2019 period, reaching 5.78 TWh. Solar power production decreased by 0.7 % to 1.6 TWh. Electricity exports in the first ten months of 2020 amounted to 4.09 TWh, which is by 48.8 % higher compared to the same period last year. At the same time electricity imports increased by 58.2 % and amounted to 6.3 TWh. Total production of primary energy resources in January-October 2020 amounted to 14,852 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 10.5 % less than in the same period in 2019. Coal production reached 2,119 million tons of oil equivalent (- 31.4 %), oil production reached 2,712 million tons of oil equivalent (- 2.4 %), while production of natural gas reached 5,985 million tons of oil equivalent (- 10.6 %).
