Romania becomes EU’s top natural gas producer, surpassing the Netherlands

According to Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja, Romania became the top natural gas producer in the European Union last year, surpassing the Netherlands in extraction volumes.

He mentioned that once the gas reserves in the Black Sea are fully developed, Romania will have the capacity to export gas while also supporting energy-intensive industries to boost their competitiveness. By moving from second to first place among EU gas producers, Romania has gained a strategic advantage. With the Neptun Deep project expected to be operational by the end of next year, the country is set to further strengthen its position.

Currently, about 10% of Romania’s gas production comes from shallow-water extraction in the Black Sea, with the remainder coming from onshore fields. Once the Neptun Deep project is completed, Romania will be able to offer more support to key industries such as pharmaceuticals, ceramics, and chemical fertilizers.
