Romania becomes EU’s largest natural gas producer in Q2

According to data released by the European Commission, Romania has emerged as the largest natural gas producer in the EU for the first time in the second quarter of 2024. The country produced 2.3 billion cubic meters of gas during this period, marking a 4% decline from the previous quarter but a 1% increase compared to the same quarter last year.

The Netherlands, previously the largest producer, continued its downward trend with an 18% quarterly drop and a 17% year-on-year decrease, producing 2.23 billion cubic meters. Germany remains the third-largest producer with 0.9 billion cubic meters, followed by Italy with 0.7 billion cubic meters in fourth place and Hungary with 0.4 billion cubic meters in fifth.

Overall, domestic EU gas production has been declining, totaling nearly 8 billion cubic meters in the second quarter. This represents an 8% decrease from the previous quarter and an 18% drop compared to the same period last year.
