Region: Romania and Serbia sign MoU to launch cross-border gas interconnection

Romania’s natural gas transmission system operator, Transgaz, and Serbia’s state gas company, Srbijagas, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance the development of a gas interconnection between the two countries. The agreement lays the foundation for cooperation by defining the main principles and organizational framework for future joint projects.

As part of the agreement, both sides have pledged to create and present a detailed action plan by September. This plan will outline the necessary steps to connect Romania’s high-pressure BRHA pipeline with Serbia’s Mokrin gas hub through the construction of a new gas interconnector, enabling a direct physical link between the national gas networks.

Alongside this effort, the two companies also agreed to move forward with the South Mokrin–PSG Banatski Dvor–Pancevo–Belgrade gas pipeline project. This initiative will strengthen Serbia’s internal gas infrastructure and enhance its integration with regional energy corridors.

Srbijagas emphasized the strategic importance of the Romania–Serbia interconnector in the current energy landscape. The project is expected to diversify gas supply sources, improve energy security, better match supply with regional demand, and facilitate smoother gas transport between EU member states and neighboring countries.
