North Macedonia upgrades transmission network to boost reliability and renewable integration

North Macedonia is advancing major investments in its electricity transmission network, highlighted by the installation of a new 400/110 kV transformer at the Dubrovo substation. This project is part of transmission system operator MEPSO’s broader modernization and expansion program aimed at improving reliability and enabling greater renewable energy integration.

Dubrovo is a vital hub in the national grid, linking the country with Greece and Bulgaria through 400 kV lines, while also connecting to domestic infrastructure such as Bitola 2 and Skopje 4. At the 110 kV level, it supplies the Negotino thermal power plant, multiple substations, industrial zones, and the wider Negotino and Kavadarci regions. The new transformer, manufactured by Turkish company Astor, is designed for a 30–40 year lifespan and will enhance voltage stability and supply security.

In addition to Dubrovo, MEPSO has completed a strategic transformer upgrade at Bitola 2, improving stability at both 400 kV and 110 kV levels. These investments lower outage risks and strengthen the system’s capacity to accommodate more renewable energy.

Modernization efforts are also progressing at the Skopje 2 substation, where five high-voltage breakers are being replaced — the first major upgrade in over 25 years. This will reinforce electricity supply in the capital and improve operational safety.

Together, these initiatives represent a significant step toward building a more resilient, efficient, and renewable-ready transmission network in North Macedonia.
