North Macedonia, Government has decided to introduce a cap on margins for electricity trading in the domestic market at 10 %

The Government of North Macedonia has decided to introduce a cap on margins for electricity trading in the domestic market at 10 % in order to prevent disruptions in the market during the energy crisis. The cap is valid until 15 April 2023.

Minister of Economy Kreshnik Bekteshi said that the decision was made after it was unveiled that many companies and public institutions have no contracts with electricity suppliers and are provided with electricity by supplier of last resort at extremely high prices, with margins up to 50 %.

Therefore, the Regulatory Commission for Energy (RKE) will make an amendment to regulations regarding the suppliers of last resort and reduce their margins to a maximum of 20 %. Minister Bekteshi said that the new rules will be applied with the start of the heating season.

In late August, the Government decided to declare a 30-days state of emergency in the energy sector due to a shortage in the supply of thermal energy used for district heating system in the capital of Skopje, as well as shortage in the supply of electricity.
