North Macedonia, GEN-I has completed and put into operation the largest solar power plant

Slovenian energy company GEN-I has completed and put into operation the largest solar power plant in North Macedonia – 17 MW facility located in Sveti Nikole municipality, which will produce 25,000 MWh of electricity per year, enough to cover the demand of some 5,500 households.

The plant was built four months ahead of the deadline and was connected to the national electricity network in September.

GEN-I Chairman Igor Koprivnikar said at the commissioning ceremony that, with this investment, North Macedonia has taken a step forward towards energy independence and strengthening of green economy. He stressed that North Macedonia is an important market for GEN-I and this project proves the company’s willingness to invest in large-scale renewable projects.

GEN-I was awarded contracts for the construction of 17 MW in solar projects on state-owned land at the tender which concluded in early 2020. A total of 25 MW in Sveti Nikole municipality and 10 MW in Makedonski Brod municipality was awarded at the tender.

North Macedonian Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski said that 130 MW in solar projects on state and privately owned land, awarded through public calls in previous years, is expected to be commissioned within two years.

At the moment, North Macedonia has 67.5 MW of installed capacity in solar power, with additional 12 MW expected to be commissioned by the end of the year.
