Montenegro: TPP Pljevlja reconstruction likely delayed

According to Miro Vracar, Assistant Director at the state-owned power utility EPCG, Montenegro’s energy situation remains stable despite facing challenges with lower production compared to the rising consumption and planned levels. The Solari 5000 project is progressing satisfactorily, and the construction of the Gvozd wind farm is expected to start soon. However, the planned ecological reconstruction of the coal-fired thermal power plant TPP Pljevlja might be postponed from next year to 2026.

Vracar noted that the delay in the TPP Pljevlja reconstruction could actually benefit EPCG. The extra time might allow for the installation and development of new energy sources to partially offset the production loss from TPP Pljevlja during its anticipated 6 to 8-month downtime. The delay stems from issues related to preparing project documentation and procuring necessary equipment.

EPCG will consult with the contractor to assess their readiness for the reconstruction project, but the company’s current assessment suggests that the contractor may not be prepared to begin the reconstruction as originally planned for next year.
