Montenegro: Submarine cable revenues in 2020

Based on effect of the commercial use of the submarine electricity cable between Montenegro and Italy, in 2020 Montenegrin electricity transmission system operator CGES earned 11.6 million euros.

CGES said that since the cable’s commissioning in November 2019, it has generated revenues from the allocation of cross-border capacity with Italy in the amount of 4.6 million euros. The launch of the new electricity interconnection also increased the interest in the allocation of cross-border transmission capacities at other borders of Montenegro, so that revenues from the borders with Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania amounted to 6.98 million euros in 2020. This is a significant increase compared to 2019, when revenues from these three borders amounted to 3.73 million euros.

In 2020, Montenegro imported 986.225 MWh of electricity via submarine cable and exported over 1.54 GWh.

The electricity interconnection to Italy was put into operation in November last year, and in December the Coordinated Auction Office in South East Europe (SEE CAO) has started the auction process for 2020 by offering the capacity of 70 MW. The link’s total capacity is 600 MW, of which Montenegro is entitled to 200 MW.
