Montenegro: HPP Komarnica project preliminary design to be completed in November

The preliminary design of the future hydropower plant Komarnica is expected to be completed in November according to Montenegrin state-owned power utility EPCG.

This will create the necessary conditions for the start of construction of this hydropower facility, it was determined in Niksic at a recent regular meeting of EPCG management with representatives of designers – the Jaroslav Cerni Institute of Water Management and the Belgrade-based company Hidroinzenjering.

The preparation of documentation is carried out according to the agreement on joint financing of preparatory works for HPP Komarnica project with a capacity of 172 MW, which EPCG and Serbian state-owned power utility EPS concluded in 1992. It determined that EPCG will participate in the costs of the project with 51 %, and EPS with 49 %.

In January, Montenegrin media reported that the first move of the new management of EPCG will be the realization of the project for the construction of hydropower plant Komarnica, which will be given to Serbian power utility EPS. EPS has long been interested in the construction of HPP Komarnica, and the new management will refer to an alleged contract from the 1980s, which gives Serbia the right to build HPP Komarnica on the basis of research funding. Last August, Montenegrin Government has awarded a concession for the construction of 172 MW HPP Komarnica to EPCG. It was previously agreed that the concession will be awarded directly to EPCG, which will decide whether it will build HPP Komarnica by itself or in partnership, as well as weather it will finance the project by itself or through a loan.
