Montenegro: EPCG signs contract for Krusevo hydropower plant project to boost energy security

Montenegrin state-owned power utility EPCG has signed a contract with the Jaroslav Cerni Institute to develop the Krusevo hydropower plant (HPP) project and conduct detailed geological studies. EPCG views this as a significant step toward realizing Montenegro’s sustainable energy goals.

The company emphasized that this contract reaffirms its commitment to enhancing energy security, sustainability, and utilizing domestic resources. The Krusevo HPP project, which will have an installed capacity of 82 MW and an estimated annual output of 170 GWh, is considered a strategic investment that will strengthen Montenegro’s energy infrastructure.

The project is based on a study, approved last year, that assessed the hydroelectric potential of the Piva River. HPP Krusevo was identified as the optimal solution for tapping into the river’s upstream water resources, entirely within Montenegro’s borders. This initiative will increase the country’s clean energy production while also improving system services, network stability, and energy security for both Montenegro and the broader region.

The importance of the HPP Krusevo project is further reinforced by EPCG’s strategic partnership with French energy company EDF. A Memorandum of Understanding signed in September will foster deeper collaboration and knowledge exchange in the fields of hydropower and renewable energy.
