Montenegro’s state-owned power utility, EPCG, has received approval for the environmental impact assessment (EIA) study for the construction of the Krupac solar power plant. The facility will be located on three sites along the shores of Lake Krupac near Nikšić, covering a total area of approximately 118 hectares.
The project, estimated at around 28.2 million euros, is part of a broader strategy to harness water resources in the Nikšić field through a combination of solar and pump-storage hydropower plants.
The Krupac solar power plant will have a total installed capacity of 46.96 MW and will feature around 192,000 photovoltaic modules. It is expected to produce approximately 61.68 GWh of electricity annually.
An added environmental benefit of the project is the reduction of water evaporation from surface streams during the summer months, as the solar panels will provide shade across a wide area. EPCG also plans to monitor and assess the plant’s impact on the nearby Poklonci water source and implement protective and enhancement measures as needed.
The Montenegrin Government previously issued urban and technical conditions for the Krupac solar project in September 2023.
