Montenegro, EPCG plans to invest additional 15 million euros in the reconstruction of TPP Pljevlja

CEO of Montenegrin state-owned power utility EPCG Nikola Rovcanin said that the company plans to invest additional 15 million euros in the reconstruction of the country’s sole coal-fired thermal power plant Pljevlja in order for it to comply with Energy Community requirements.

Rovcanin said that the company’s expert team came to the conclusion that it is necessary to invest an additional 15 million euros in the
reconstruction of the plant’s boiler, in order to comply with all European regulations and standards.

Last year, Montenegro signed a 54.4 million euros agreement for the reconstruction of TPP Pljevlja with a consortium led by Chinese Dongfang Electric. However, the contractor informed the Government that the planned amount will not be enough for an overhaul to meet the environmental standards set by the Energy Community, after which EPCG launched a tender for the reconstruction of the plant’s boiler.

Rovcanin expects that the contractor for the works on the plant’s boiler will be selected in late January or early February.

Last April, the Energy Community Secretariat sent an Opening Letter to Montenegro to address its breach of the Large Combustion Plants Directive. In particular, the country’s sole thermal power plant Pljevlja, continues to operate despite the expiry of the limited lifetime derogation period of the plant.
