Macedonia, Government of North Macedonia will decide on the allocation of funds to energy companies

On 9 November, the Government of North Macedonia will decide on the allocation of funds to energy companies in order to cover their increased expenses for covering domestic demand, as well as on declaring the state of emergency in the energy sector.

The declaration of the state of emergency will not introduce any kind of restrictions, but it will make available additional funds for the affected energy companies. Currently, there are about 100 million euros left over from coronavirus relief measures.

Electricity transmission system operator MEPSO needs additional 30 million euros, while power utility ESM urgently needs money to buy coal for TPP Bitola, since there are no funds allocated for this purpose in its budget.

At the moment, North Macedonia is able to cover less than 40 % of its electricity demand, while the rest is imported.
