Hungary to offer discounted electricity to more microenterprises starting January 2025

Hungarian Energy Minister Csaba Lantos announced that, starting in January 2025, more microenterprises will have access to discounted electricity through the universal service program, in line with the country’s economic action plan. The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that Hungarian consumers benefit from the lowest electricity and gas prices in Europe. He emphasized the importance of reducing energy costs for businesses, noting that high energy expenses have a significant impact on operations and that lowering these costs is essential for preserving jobs and boosting the economy.

Minister Lantos also pointed out that eligibility criteria for microenterprises to access the universal service were modified in August 2022 in response to the global energy crisis. In addition, he highlighted the collaboration between the Hungarian Association of Craftsmen’s Corporations (IPOSZ) and state-owned energy company MVM to alleviate financial burdens on businesses. As part of a recent agreement, nearly 1,000 microenterprises had their debts, totaling almost 400,000 euros, forgiven by the end of October.

Looking ahead, the Minister explained that under the economic action plan, these businesses will be able to purchase electricity at significantly lower rates once their current contracts expire. He emphasized that the Ministry of Energy remains fully dedicated to fostering economic growth, increasing employment, and enhancing the competitiveness of Hungarian businesses.
