Hungary, Share of RES in the country’s total electricity generation reached 19.2 % in 2021

According to preliminary data published by the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH), the share of renewable energy in the country’s total electricity generation reached 19.2 % in 2021.

The majority of “green” electricity was generated by solar power plants – 3,793 GWh, which is a 54.3 % increase year-on-year. Solar reached 10.6 % share in Hungary’s total electricity generation in 2021 and 55.2 % share in electricity generation from renewable energy sources. It was followed by wind with 25.9 % and biomass with 9.5 %.

Hungary’s gross electricity generation amounted to 35,805 GWh in 2021, which is an increase of 2.05 % compared to 2020. Nuclear power had the largest share in electricity generation with 44.7 %, followed by fossil fuels with 35.1 %.

Hungary’s total electricity consumption has increased by 5.3 % year-on-year, with imports covering about 26.3 % of the demand.
