Hungary: New nuclear fuel modification for NPP Paks

Although a coal phase-out is already planned, Hungary keeps relying on nuclear power, which currently accounts for 48 % of the energy mix, and plans the construction of two new units at NPP Paks.

Russian company TVEL, part of state-owned Rosatom, has completed the project of development and validation of the new nuclear fuel modification for the VVER-440 reactors operated at the Hungarian sole nuclear power plant Paks.

TVEL President Natalia Nikipelova said that the introduction of the new fuel modification at all four units of the plant would enable the operator to decrease gradually the fuel share in electricity generation cost, giving an essential economic impact. NPP Paks contributes about the half of Hungary’s total electricity generation in Hungary, and TVEL is proud to provide the Hungarian nuclear power units with reliable supplies of the fuel which would be both high-quality and commercially attractive.

The new modification of VVER-440 second generation fuel would optimise the hydro-uranium ratio in the reactor core, enabling to increase the efficiency of fuel usage and advance the economic performance of the power plant operation.
