Hungary: Electricity prices drop in April 2025 amid lower demand and market volatility

The average electricity price on Hungary’s day-ahead market (DAM), operated by the Hungarian Power Exchange (HUPX), fell significantly in April 2025. The average baseload price dropped to €85.46/MWh—22% lower than in March, when it stood at €108.90/MWh. The average peak price saw an even sharper decline, falling to €62.46/MWh, marking a 38% decrease compared to February levels.

Traded volumes on the day-ahead market also saw a slight decrease. In April, 2.49 million MWh were traded, down 6% from March (2.65 million MWh), though still 1.6% higher than in April 2024 (2.53 million MWh). The average daily traded volume in April was 82,945 MWh.

The intraday market also experienced a dip. Total traded volume amounted to 940,929 MWh in April 2025, 2% lower than the previous month. The average daily volume reached 31,364 MWh. Meanwhile, the average price for hourly intraday products fell to €75.34/MWh—down 27% month-over-month.

These price declines reflect a broader trend of easing electricity costs in the region, potentially driven by lower seasonal demand, increased renewable generation, and favorable weather conditions. The continued moderation in intraday and DAM prices may offer temporary relief to energy-intensive industries and consumers amid longer-term market uncertainties.
