Greek Government approved the project for biomass power plant

The biomass power plant will be located in Amyntaio in West Macedonia, the region hit hard with planned coal phase-out. Greek Government approved the project for the construction of biomass power plant with total installed capacity of 31 MW, developed by the renewable energy arm of state-controlled Public Power Corporation (PPC).

Out of its 31 MW output, maximum of 25 MW will be delivered to the national electricity grid, while 6 MW will be used for internal consumption by PPC. The plant will use energy crop (miscanthus) and wood waste as fuel in equal ratio. Its estimated annual electricity generation is 186 GWh.

PPC Renewables is developing RES projects in traditionally lignite production regions, which will suffer the most from the planned coal phaseout. It already launched tender for the construction of 230 MW solar power plant in Kozani in West Macedonia and 50 MW solar power plant in Megalopoli in Peloponnese.

PPC Renewables is also investing in wind power, as it recently approved the agreement with oil refiner Motor Oil on the establishment of a joint venture company for the purpose of 100 MW wind project on one of the Greek islands. It also signed MoUs with German RWE, Portuguese EDP Renovavies and UAE-based Masdar on cooperation in renewable energy field.
