Greece: Wattcrop to install 273 MW battery energy storages

Greek company Wattcrop has submitted applications with energy regulator for the future interconnection of 273 MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS).

The applications have been lodged with Independent Power Transmission Operator IPTO, Wattcrop said.

Ptolemaida-based Wattcrop is seeking grid-connection conditions for three projects that will have a combined capacity of 273.1 MW/1,092.4 MWh. The largest one of the three is the 100-MW/400 MWh Serres project to be installed in the Amfipoli municipality. Another facility of 90.9 MW/363.6 MWh will be added in the Thessaloniki unit, which will also host a standalone system of 82.2 MW/328.8 MWh.

The three battery facilities would enhance the regional energy infrastructure and promote the further adoption of renewable energy capacity.

At the end of 2023, Wattcrop had 773.1 MW/3,092.4 MWh of BESS projects undergoing licensing. The company plans to develop 1 GW of large-scale energy storage projects within three years.
