Hungary: Uniper sells Gonyu gas-fired power plant to Veolia

German energy company Uniper has completed the sale of the Gonyu gas-fired power plant in Hungary to the French utility Veolia.

The Gonyu power plant, with a capacity of 428 MW, is one of Hungary’s largest combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants. Originally commissioned in 2011, it was upgraded in 2017 and 2021 to improve efficiency and capacity. The plant currently supplies about 8% of Hungary’s electricity.

The sale, first announced in February 2024, is part of Uniper’s compliance with EU state aid regulations. In December 2022, the European Commission approved a stabilization package for Uniper, which included several structural measures the company must implement.

Veolia has stated that acquiring the Gonyu plant fits its long-term strategy to enhance Hungary’s energy supply efficiency and increase the use of renewable energy. Veolia already operates a number of gas-fired power plants and renewable energy facilities in Hungary.
