Greece: Solar sector poised for major expansion in 2025

Greece’s solar energy sector is expected to further solidify its leading role in the country’s renewable energy landscape throughout 2025, according to the latest projections.

By the end of 2024, solar installations — including both small-scale systems and large solar farms — accounted for 62 percent of Greece’s total renewable energy infrastructure. Out of the country’s total renewable capacity of 15.2 gigawatts (GW), solar contributed 9.4 GW.

Wind energy remains the second-largest renewable source, making up approximately 34 percent of the installed capacity. However, its share is expected to decline relative to solar, as solar power is projected to capture nearly all of the sector’s upcoming growth.

Data from the renewable energy market operator DAPEEP shows that 1,478 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy projects with guaranteed feed-in tariffs are scheduled to be added in 2025. Of that total, solar projects are expected to deliver 1,384 MW — around 94 percent — highlighting a sharp acceleration in photovoltaic development and an expanding gap between solar and wind power in Greece’s energy mix.
