Greece sees sharp drop in renewable energy grid connection applications

Applications for connecting renewable energy projects to Greece’s electricity transmission network totaled 507 MW in March, one of the lowest levels recorded in recent years. This figure falls significantly below the typical monthly average of around 1 GW, raising questions about whether the decline is a temporary fluctuation or a response to growing risks in the renewable energy sector.

During the March application cycle, ADMIE, Greece’s electricity transmission system operator, received just ten submissions for new renewable energy units. This total ranks as the second-lowest in over a year, with the lowest recorded level occurring in January at 243 MW. However, January’s dip is often attributed to reduced activity due to early submission deadlines following the New Year period.

Despite the slowdown in renewable energy applications, interest in standalone battery storage projects remained strong. ADMIE received 12 applications for battery storage systems in March, totaling 659 MW, continuing the sector’s recent growth trend.
