Greece: RES generation hits record levels in June

In the first half of 2024, renewable energy sources, including hydropower, achieved a record 52.9% share in power generation, surpassing the combined contribution of fossil fuels for the first time. Electricity production from renewables increased by 24.2% compared to the same period last year, with June setting a monthly record of 2,252 GWh.

Despite this, the use of natural gas for electricity generation rose even faster, by 36.9%, reaching a 34.3% share. The Green Tank think tank noted that the share of natural gas might have been lower if 494 GWh of electricity had not been rejected by the transmission network operator ADMIE.

In terms of total electricity production in the first half of 2024, renewables (excluding hydropower) generated 12,306 GWh, followed by natural gas with 9,148 GWh, hydropower with 1,810 GWh, oil with 1,564 GWh, and lignite with 1,498 GWh. Hydropower ranked third in generation for only the second time (the first was in 2021), while lignite fell to fifth place for the first time ever. Oil is primarily used on islands not yet connected to the national grid.

Electricity imports were minimal, totaling just 342 GWh, the lowest six-month amount since 2021, when imports were 2,188 GWh.
